Description
The harbour consists of a pair of parallel piers extending into the bay. The northern pier dates from the mid-to-late 18th century. The southern pier was designed by engineer Joseph Mitchell in 1830. Both piers are constructed of large, dressed rubble blocks and have flat tops made of the same material. Each pier is fitted with two squat, circa-1830 cast-iron bollards. The piers are connected by a sloping breastwork of squared rubble, which abuts the shoreline.
By the late 18th century, the original pier was described as useful but insufficient. The second pier was linked to the original pier by this breastwork, and the combined project cost over £1,300.
