Description
Dated 1773, 12 Quay Cottage is a two-storey and attic house with a raised basement, facing south. The basement extends forward to form a terrace fronted by cast-iron spearhead railings. The front of the house is harled, while the flanks and rear are of rubble construction, with ashlar dressings and margins. A central entrance is marked by a moulded, lugged, and corniced doorpiece, sheltering a later 18th or early 19th century panelled door. The front windows are margined, and there are three later 19th century canted dormers. The west (seaward) gable has regular fenestration with multi-pane glazing. The house has corniced end stacks, flat skews topped with scroll skewputts, each decorated with a carved nautilus shell, a slate roof, and a stone ridge.
A lintel above the doorway is inscribed "James Rose Margaret Simson 1773." The house was once part of the Rose family’s property of Kilravock (Nairnshire), held from the end of the 17th century until sold to Sir Hector Munro of Novar in 1776, and remains in the Munro family. The nautilus shell decoration on the skewputts is characteristic of Findhorn, Rafford (dated 1776), and Forres (featuring 18th and early 19th century examples), with similar panelled front doors surviving in Forres.
