Description
This is a granary warehouse, likely dating from 1772. It was originally a single-story building with a loft, featuring an 8-bay front elevation facing south, set within a courtyard bordered by houses and a rubble wall that separates the property from the street. The exterior is of harl-pointed rubble with ashlar dressings. Raised entrances are located in the outer bays, each accessed by a short forestair. There are three ground-floor doorways; one has been enlarged into a garage entrance, one is blocked as a window, and the remaining doorway has roll-moulded jambs. Two ground-floor windows have checked jambs, designed to receive shutters, and retain hooks and hinges. Four small, rectangular loft windows are protected by horizontal iron bars; two of these windows have been blocked.
Small, flat-roofed dormers have been added to the rear wallhead. A later brick rear wall features two stacks, and the roof is covered in local stone slate with a crowstepped gable. Loading areas at the rear and at the front of the former warehouse are now used as a car park and partially infilled by modern extensions to ‘The Lodge’, a building of around 1800 that has undergone significant alteration.
Historically, grain from nearby farms was shipped to London in the 18th century from Findhorn. Other goods exported included dyed thread spun in the village, and locally caught salmon. The building is referenced in a survey of Moray from 1798, and additional information was provided by the current owners in 1987.
