Description
Dated 1739, the Crown and Anchor Inn is a two-storey and attic, narrow, four-bay house facing south. It has steeply pitched crowstepped gables. A later two-storey, three-bay addition was built onto the east gable, with a shallower roof pitch. A modern, single-storey extension with a flat roof is located on the east side. The walls are white harled, with contrasting painted window reveals. A modern porch obscures the original entrance. The original house has narrow windows on its north and south elevations; the later additions have larger windows on both sides. There are two piended dormers in the front roof slope of the original house, and one in the rear. Most windows have two panes of glass. Coped end stacks rise from slate roofs.
The interior of the west room on the ground floor of the older portion of the building contains a large, segmental-headed hearth.
Early 19th century photographs show the inn with a thatched roof. Originally flanking the entrance to the present car park were a pair of fine 18th century rusticated ashlar gatepiers with ball finials on shaped bases. The east gable addition was initially a single-storey, three-bay cottage, later raised to two storeys. A skewputt bears the initials 'H MB 1739'.
The Mercat Cross, re-erected on 7 May 1979 opposite the west gable of the inn, is largely new work, though it replicates the original, with some fragments of an earlier cross incorporated. The Mercat Cross is not included in this listing.
