Description

This is a Gothic mausoleum, built in 1829 by William Robertson of Elgin. Constructed of coursed, tooled pink granite with tooled and polished ashlar sandstone dressings, it is rectangular and orientated east-west. The west gable features a shallow, pointed, hoodmoulded recessed entrance centrally placed, while the east gable has a similar headed Y-tracery window with a small oculus above. Angle buttresses are present on the corners. Canopied niches are located centrally on the north and south elevations, featuring delicate cusped detailing and diminutive ribbed soffits on their canopies, which appear to be re-used architectural elements. Each niche sits upon a corbelled base, supporting an octagonal pedestal, also seemingly repurposed. A concave moulded eaves cornice runs continuously up to crowstepped gables, and apex crosses adorn the roof. The roof itself is covered in Banffshire slate. The Statistical Account mentions a former 16th-century church and an adjoining burial aisle dating to 1586, originally intended as a family burial place for the Ballindalloch family. The mausoleum was commissioned by George (later Sir George) MacPherson-Grant of Ballindalloch and Invereshie and he was buried within in 1846.
