Description

St John's Episcopal Church, located on Victoria Road in Forres, was built between 1830 and 1840 and designed by architect Patrick Wilson from Edinburgh. The church has undergone significant alterations and was encased in an Italianate style by Thomas Mackenzie from Elgin in 1844.

The church features a cruciform plan oriented north to south. Its front is made of ashlar stone, with coursed rubble and harled sides. The gable facing the street has a wheel window flanked by blind panels and is adorned with outer giant pilasters that support a full-width pediment. There is a three-bay arcaded portico that spans the entire width of the gable, and to the east, a four-stage campanile boasts open balustraded arcades on its third and fourth stages. The roof is shallow and piended, with corbelled eaves and a weathervane in the shape of St John's cross topped by a golden cock. The campanile is connected to the east transept by a five-bay open arcade similar to the portico. High-set square windows in the aisles feature simple circle-sectioned tracery, while the semi-circular apse has a triple-light stained glass window. Round-headed paired lights are present in the east and west gables, and the church has deep eaves and a slate roof.

Inside, the church has a simple design with plain walls and a flat coffered ceiling, along with a mosaic floor. It contains oak seating and a pulpit, a brass altar rail, and an eagle lectern. A circular roof light is located at the crossing, and there is a narrow gallery at the south end of the church with a latticed cast-iron balustrade.

The apse features mural paintings, including one of the Last Supper by William Hole from 1907, and another painting by the same artist at the font depicting Christ blessing little children from 1911.
