Description
Mulben Station, built around 1858, was originally the station master's house. It is a two-storey, three-bay dwelling facing west, with a single-storey and attic, three-bay wing at the rear that was once part of the station and is now a dwelling. This wing features a canopied platform area in the north-facing re-entrant. The building is constructed of tooled rubble with tooled ashlar dressings.
The station master's house has a corniced doorway located in the slightly recessed central bay. There are two segmental-headed windows on the first floor, set in gablets. The glazing is primarily four-pane. The end stacks are coped and rise from slightly advanced gable flues, with a corbelled and shaped mid-height north gable designed to accommodate a station clock, although the clock face is missing.
The former station has a south-facing entrance front with a central door in an advanced porch that has a swept roof. There is a modern front dormer and an original gabletted dormer at the rear facing the railway track. The rear platform area is canopied and features a glazed roof supported by slender painted cast-iron columns. The glazing varies throughout the building. The roofs are all covered with slate.
