Description
The Railway Bridge at Boat O' Brig was designed by Joseph Mitchell in 1858. It features a viaduct made up of a steel lattice-girder, which was installed in 1906 to replace an earlier plate-girder bridge. The structure includes a 6-span approach on the western bank and a single span on the eastern bank. The bridge is constructed with tooled ashlar and some bull-faced ashlar dressings.
On the western bank, there are three wide and three narrower rusticated arch rings, with the wider arches located closer to the riverbank and supported by bull-faced ashlar cutwaters. The eastern bank has a single arch ring also supported by bull-faced cutwaters. The bridge is finished with panelled pilastered end abutments, string courses, and ashlar copes.
The approximate span of the steel girder bridge is 250 feet, while the overall span is about 635 feet.
