Description
North College, located at Elgin Cathedral on North College Street, is a large L-plan house that dates back to 1520 and 1858. It is a two-storey building with an attic, originating from the late 15th or early 16th century, though it has undergone significant alterations and additions over the years. The structure is primarily built of rubble with some harling and features ashlar dressings.
Very little of the original early structure is visible today, but there are 17th century rolled mouldings on the southeast windows, along with a large chimney and a guarderobe corbelled out on the north elevation. Most of the windows were enlarged in the late 18th or early 19th century when a large three-storey bowed bay with a semi-conical roof was added to the west elevation.
In the mid-19th century, the current entrance was inserted into a broad bowed full-height bay located in the re-entrant angle. This entrance features a corbelled gabled hood above the door and a corbelled second storey with two wallhead pedimented dormers, as well as similarly pedimented decorative dormers on the south and east elevations.
There is also a later 19th century single storey and attic T-plan extension with an advanced outer gable bay on both the east and west sides. All the gables are crowstepped, and the building has coped chimney stacks and slated roofs.
Inside, the ground floor features a barrel vaulted ceiling, and the scale and plat staircase is likely from the late 17th century.
Additionally, there is a picturesque mid-19th century asymmetrical gabled lodge that is two storeys with an attic. This lodge is constructed of coursed rubble and harling, with ashlar dressings. It includes a gabled porch, a canted bay to the east, and a cusped window below a coped stack with three diamond corniced flues. The lodge also has decorative bargeboards and a slate roof.
