Description

Saint Gerardine's Church, designed by architect Sir John J Burnet between 1899 and 1903, is an L-plan building that combines the church with ancillary structures on an east-facing hilltop site. The church features a square two-storey tower at its eastern end, constructed with harled walls and tooled ashlar dressings.

The south elevation of the tower has a substantial gabled entrance porch with a high round-headed entrance that is closed by double-leaf wooden doors. There are two additional entrances in the east-facing ancillary range. The building has wide three-light windows positioned close to the eaves.

The second stage of the tower includes round-headed louvred bipartites on each face, featuring long and short detailing and nook shafts. The tower is topped with a corbelled wallhead and a squat red tiled spire with a weather-cock.

All windows display long and short detailing, with some being round-headed and all featuring small lattice-pane glazing. The roofs are covered with red tiles.

Inside, the church is oriented westward and includes a gallery in the tower at the east, along with an arcaded south aisle. The interior is harled and showcases varied coloured ashlar dressings, particularly in the round-arched arcade, window reveals, and chancel walls. The west gable is lit by paired round-headed Romanesque windows with nook shafts and some coloured glass. There is a canted ashlar pulpit, a panelled front to the gallery, and simple pine pews with brass umbrella and walking stick retainers fitted to each pew end. The ceiling is a braced barrel vault with some cusped detailing at the chancel.

A freestanding column from the former Drainie Parish Church, featuring Corinthian detailing on its damaged capital and a carved base, is set to the east of the ancillary wing and stands on a square granite base.

The church is surrounded by low rubble walls, and the main entrance is flanked by square rubble tooled ashlar gatepiers with flat caps and substantial end piers topped with squat conical finials.
