Description

Gordon Castle's farmsteading, designed by Archibald Simpson in 1828-29, is a substantial range that forms a hollow square, incorporating both dwellings and farm buildings, most of which have been gutted and converted for modern agricultural use.

The exterior is finished in red harling with tooled ashlar margins and dressings. The main southwest-facing front range features a central arched entrance, with a tall ashlar segmental-headed archway topped by a corniced and stepped blocking course. Flanking this entrance are two mirrored, two-storey dwellings that project at the front and back as single bay gables, angled towards the courtyard. Each dwelling is connected to the archway by a set-back single bay, which contains a bracketted corniced entrance. The ground floor has long windows, also with bracketted cornices, while the first-floor windows are lower, with some bays facing inward being blind.

The outer ranges, which are single storey and loft, are set back and consist of six bays. Each window features lunette fenestration above, set in shallow round-headed recesses. The left side has all blind front fenestration, while the right side includes a nearly central gabled porch. The glazing is varied, with some lying-pane windows. The building has squat coped and shaped ridge stacks, and the roofs are slate with projecting jointed eaves.

Additionally, there are two long single-storey west ranges that run parallel to the main square and are linked at the gabled frontage by square panelled ashlar gatepiers.
