Description
The Divie Railway Viaduct in Edinkillie was designed by chief engineer Joseph Mitchell and constructed between 1861 and 1863. This impressive structure features seven spans and is built from bull-faced rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. Each of the seven bull-faced rubble arch rings is supported by tall piers made of similar masonry. The approach causeways are flanked by castellated turrets that have dummy arrow slits, and the end piers are octagonal and crenellated. The viaduct has a coped parapet with mirrored plaques at the center, facing the railway track. Each arch spans 45 feet, the height above the river bed is 106 feet, and the overall length of the viaduct is 477 feet.
