Description
Mains of Dunphail is an irregular single and two-storey Italianate farmhouse designed in the style of William Playfair, dating from around 1830. The building features harl pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The main block is square and two-storey with a single bay, showcasing paired round-headed windows on each face. The upper windows are connected by a continuous cill band or string course. It has a shallow slated pyramidal roof with deep bracketed eaves. The entrance is located in a single-storey range within a square-headed recess. The glazing is varied, and the house includes end and wallhead stacks, all under slate roofs with bracketed eaves.
Adjacent to the farmhouse is a former cartshed and granary, which is a single storey with a loft and has a south-facing three-bay elevation linked to the house by a short screen wall. This structure is also built of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and margins. It features three tall round-headed cart bays, some of which are now infilled, and regular paired round-headed loft windows positioned close under the projecting eaves. There is a coped end stack at the east with unusual panelled detailing at the base, a bellcote at the west, and a slate roof.
