85 High Street, Dalkeith

83 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay terraced tenement with a shop on the ground floor. The building features stugged ashlar that is painted at the ground level, with raised margins and quoins. There is a lintel course at the eaves level and a moulded band course between the first and second floors, along with an eaves cornice and blocking course that are continuous with No 81 High Street.

The east elevation facing High Street has a symmetrical five-bay shop front, which includes a pend with a panelled fanlight in the outer right bay. The shop front has a central double door with two-leaf panelled outer doors, flanked by paired windows. It also features earlier 20th-century wrought-iron window guards and a plain consoled cornice. The first and second floors have regularly arranged fenestration, with blind windows in the centre bay and ashlar mullioned tripartite windows in the outer bays.

The west elevation consists of a gabled rubble building extending westward, with an additional double-gabled three-storey range that is shared with No 81 High Street, located to the right. The north elevation has a gable that is rendered above the adjoining building, No 78 High Street. The south elevation is adjoined to No 81 High Street.

The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in sash and case style. There is a skew and rendered stack on the north side, and the roof is covered with grey slates.
