Description

108-110 High Street in Dalkeith is an earlier 19th-century, three-storey, three-bay tenement with a shop on the ground floor. The building is constructed of squared and coursed rubble with finely droved ashlar dressings. The early 20th-century tripartite shop front features geometric tile-facing and is located on the west side. There is a base course and a lintel course at the eaves level, along with an eaves cornice and raised margins, including an angle margin on the right.

On the west elevation facing High Street, there is a keystoned round-arched pend entrance on the outer left, which includes a door and fanlight. The shop door is flanked by plate glass windows in the centre and to the right. Above this, a cornice and fascia display the shop name, supported by small gablet-capped mannered consoles. The first and second floors feature regular fenestration.

The east elevation has a rubble and harled projection with a swept roof in the left and centre bays. The pend on the right opens into a small court, which is enclosed by a two-storey building that connects to the rear block of Nos 112 and 114 High Street, providing access to No 110 and the rear entrance of Nos 112 and 114.

The north elevation is adjoined to Nos 112 and 114 High Street, while the south elevation is adjoined to Nos 104 and 106 High Street. The building features sash and case windows, with a plate glass glazing pattern on the west and a 12-pane design on the east. The deep coped skews and scroll skewputts are present on the mutual gables to the west, with a skewputt to the left under the cornice of the neighbouring buildings, Nos 112 and 114. There is an ashlar gablehead stack on the south side and a mutual brick stack on the north. The roof is covered with grey slates.
