Description
Montagu Bridge, built by Robert Adam in 1792, is a striking classical vehicle bridge oriented east-west. It features a single span with a semicircular arch made of droved ashlar stone. The piers are advanced from the abutments and include deep niches, with moulded rectangular panels above that showcase a waved relief and a floral motif. The parapet is raised over the piers and at the center of the bridge. A dentilled cornice and a frieze of circular motifs in moulded panels are located below the parapet. The bridge also has a moulded archivolt and a barrel-vaulted pend to the east, as well as a barrel-vaulted chamber to the southeast. Approaching the bridge, there are cast-iron spearhead railings.
To the northwest, there is a buttressed rubble wall and steps leading to the embankment. Additionally, there is a low man-made weir that stretches across the width of the River North Esk.
