Description

The Tay Bridge, built in 1733 by William Adam, is a classically-detailed structure that spans the River Tay on the road from Crieff to Dalnacardoch. It features five segmental arches and is framed by four elegant obelisks on the parapet that highlight the central arch. The bridge is constructed from chlorite schist rubble, accented with ashlar dressings, keystones, and voussoirs. It has a stepped band course and a flat-coped parapet.

On the southwest (upstream) side, the bridge has a broad central arch with a 60-foot span that is taller than the others. This arch features a stepped keystone topped with a white marble panel displaying a crown, sceptre, and sword at the parapet. Flanking cutwaters lead to quoined refuges at road level, each containing a panelled obelisk base. The adjacent arches, spanning 35 feet, have raised and stepped voussoirs and full-height canted-out refuges with aediculed marble panels. The outer arches, each with a 30-foot span, are similarly detailed and include small stone cannons projecting from the outer elevations to the west. The approaches to the bridge are splayed with flat-coped parapets and pyramidal copes.

The northeast (downstream) elevation mirrors the southwest side but features aediculed panels with grey stone tablets instead of marble.
