Description

Dunolly House is a late 19th century, two-storey and attic house with a single-storey and attic wing, situated on Kenmore Road, Aberfeldy. The house is three bays wide and features a prominent, three-stage crenellated tower and steeply-pitched dormer gables. It is constructed from squared chlorite-slate rubble with contrasting, roughly-faced sandstone ashlar dressings, including a visible base course. The windows incorporate some round-headed arches with hoodmoulds, and stone mullions.

The South (principal) elevation is symmetrical, with a central flat-roofed stone porch supported by a cornice and blocking course. The porch contains a panelled timber door with smaller glazed panels to each side, a single window above, and a narrow light on each return. Flanking the porch are slightly projecting gabled bays, each with a bipartite (two-part) window on both floors. The upper floor is jettied, and each gablehead features a small, round-headed window with a decorative finial.

The West elevation showcases a three-stage crenellated tower projecting to the right of centre, possessing five windows on each stage, the topmost being round-headed and with hoodmoulds. A metal fire escape is located within the re-entrant angle of the tower. A gabled bay sits centrally with a bipartite window to each floor and a round-headed, hoodmoulded window in the gablehead. A lower, later wing is positioned to the left, featuring a ground floor window and a bipartite window breaking through the eaves into a dormerhead above.

The East elevation presents a broad gabled bay with a corbelled and stepped full-height chimney breast at its centre. A narrow light is situated on the right at first floor level, and a further bay contains single windows to the right. A large, flat-roofed extension is attached at ground level.

The North (rear) elevation reveals the gableheads of the original building above a lower wing extension, with a variety of architectural details including a first-floor door.

The windows are timber sash and case, with four panes of glass and plate glass, and are fitted with panelled shutters. The roof is covered in grey slates, complemented by coped ashlar stacks topped with decorative cans. Overhanging eaves are finished with plain bargeboarding, and square-section cast-iron downpipes are visible.

The interior exhibits decorative plasterwork cornicing and ceiling roses, panelled shutters, a screen door with etched glass, and a timber dog-leg staircase with square newel posts.

A single-storey and attic, three-bay slated rubble cottage is located to the Northeast. Its South (front) elevation is symmetrical, featuring a part-glazed timber door at ground level, bipartite windows in the flanking bays, and matching dormer windows breaking through the eaves.

Stepped, coped, and rendered boundary walls are interspersed with railings, complemented by pyramidally-coped, square-section panelled gatepiers and decorative cast-iron gates.
