Description

The Black Watch Monument, located on Taybridge Drive in Aberfeldy, was designed by John and William Birnie Rhind in 1887 and built by Messrs Gow & Dewar. It was rebuilt in 1910 after sustaining damage from lightning. This memorial, constructed as a piled boulder cairn, honors the Royal Highland Regiment. At each face of the cairn, there is a large tablet, topped by a figure of Private Farquhar Shaw, who is depicted in an early Regimental uniform, carrying a flintlock musket and drawing a sword.

On the northeast elevation, the figure of a soldier is shown in the 1887 Highlander parade uniform, inscribing a tablet that lists the engagements of the Black Watch. The southwest elevation features a relief-carved bust of Queen Victoria above the inscription, "1887 THE YEAR OF THE JUBILEE OF QUEEN VICTORIA / THIS SITE HAS BEEN KINDLY GRANTED BY THE MOST NOBLE GAVIN MARQUIS OF BREADALBANE." The southeast elevation includes an inscription detailing the first assembly of the 'INDEPENDENT COMPANIES' in October 1739 and the first muster of the 'ROYAL HIGHLANDERS' in May 1740. Below this, another tablet notes that "ON 5TH SEPTEMBER 1970 / THE FREEDOM OF THE BURGH OF ABERFELDY WAS CONFERRED UPON THE BLACK WATCH." Finally, the northwest elevation features a tablet inscribed in Gaelic.
