Description

Airdene, located at 20 Edinburgh Road in Dalkeith, is a former manse built in 1802. This two-storey building features an attic and cellar, along with adjoining service wings. The southern elevation is constructed from squared, coursed, and pinned rubble, while the other elevations are made of rubble with ashlar dressings. The building has a lintel course at the eaves level and an eaves cornice, with raised margins and raised angle margins.

On the southern (principal) elevation, there is a corniced and architraved doorpiece at the center, featuring a deep-set panelled door with a radial fanlight. The outer bays at ground level have canted windows with a cornice and blocking course, while the first floor has regular fenestration. To the left, there is a single-storey bay with a two-leaf glazed door that is recessed. A transverse screen wall with an entrance to the court is recessed to the right, and there is a wrought-iron light bracket with a suspended lantern above the door.

The northern elevation has a bipartite window to the right at ground level, with a window and a slit window flanking to the right, and another window to the left on the first floor. There are lower gabled service wings attached to the left and center, with a single-storey block to the right. The northern elevation has four windows, and there is evidence of a former door on the right return. To the left, there is a single-storey and attic, two-bay block that is regularly fenestrated, featuring piended dormer windows that break the eaves.

On the western elevation, there is a window to the right on the first floor and a small attic window also to the right. A lean-to block is attached at ground level, which appears as a screen wall on the southern elevation. This side has a canted window at the center and a segmental-arched doorway at the basement to the right, which is bricked up and has a modern door.

The eastern elevation features a small attic window to the left, with lean-to outbuildings enclosed within a walled court attached at ground level. The boundary is defined by a semicircular and flat coped rubble wall with pyramidal-capped square piers.

The windows are primarily small-pane glazing patterns in sash and case style, with mostly 12-pane configurations and 8-pane sidelights in the canted windows. There are two modern slate-hung gabled dormer windows on the southern pitch, with coped skews and gablehead stacks rendered to the east. The roof is covered with grey slates.
