Description

51-53 Broomberry Drive is a substantial two-storey and attic flatted villa built around 1900, located on a sloping corner site. The villa features mock half-timber details and is constructed from red sandstone, with coursed and squared bull-faced rubble and polished ashlar dressings, while the rear and side are rendered. Notable architectural elements include a base course, chamfered reveals to doorways, overhanging eaves with exposed rafters, plain bargeboards, and ashlar mullions and transoms.

The southwest elevation facing Broomberry Drive is asymmetrical with five bays. The central bay has a two-storey canted window topped with a decorative cast-iron parapet that serves as a balcony for the gabled dormer, which features a half-timbered gablehead and a quasi-Venetian window. To the right, there is a doorway with a two-leaf panelled door and a stained glass fanlight, alongside a small stained glass window. Above, a transomed tripartite window with a bracketed cill is present. The outer right bay is advanced and features tripartite windows with sidelights that break the eaves in a half-timbered gablehead. The left bays display regular fenestration, with the ground floor windows being corniced and bipartite in the outer left.

On the southeast elevation facing John Street, there are three bays on the slope. The central bay includes a round-arched keystoned and hood-moulded doorway with a panelled door and a plate glass fanlight above. The outer bays feature two-storey canted windows, and there is a later rectangular dormer.

The northwest elevation has three bays, with a rendered stair leading to a first-floor doorway on the right, which has a boarded door and a narrow two-pane fanlight. The left side features single and bipartite windows.

The villa has timber sash and case windows, with coloured multi-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. The piended slate roof is finished with lead flashings, red tile ridge, and finials, and there are wallhead stacks on the northwest and northeast sides. Decorative downpipe brackets add to the exterior detailing.

The interior was not seen in 1993.
