Description

Latheron Old Parish Church is a T-plan church built in 1734. It is faced with rendered and lined ashlar, with ashlar surrounds to all windows. A stumpy, square tower, constructed in 1822, projects from the north gable, incorporating a central porch at its base. The tower rises to a square bellcote, featuring simple round-headed arches on each face, angle pilasters, and a facetted domed lead roof set on an octagonal base. Four windows are symmetrically arranged on the south elevation, with single windows on the north wing (added in 1822), and the east and west gables. The windows have 10 panes of glass, and the roof is covered with composite tiles.

The interior has been cleared for use as a Clan Gunn museum. A central octagonal, panelled pulpit stands along the south wall, with flanking stairs. Some bench seating and mural memorials remain.

The church is set within a drystone walled burial ground, featuring three rubble gatepiers that frame pedestrian and carriage entrances. The burial ground contains a closely packed collection of high-quality tombstones dating from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. A small, gabled rubble watch house is also present.

The land beneath the church is designated as a Scheduled Monument ("Latheron Old Church & The Aisle" - Monument No 3295) and is therefore excluded from this listing. Significant archaeological remains may survive both above and below ground, relating to the church and wider site.

The statutory address for the listed building is Latheron Old Parish Church and Burial Ground, excluding Scheduled Monument No 3295 'Latheron Old Church and The Aisle', Latheron.
