Description
This is a T-plan church dating from 1734. The exterior is rendered with a stone facing, and features stone window surrounds. A squat, square tower was added in 1822, projecting from the north gable. A central porch is incorporated into the base of the tower. The tower rises to a square bellcote with a simple round-headed arch on each face. Angle pilasters support a facetted domed lead roof atop an octagonal base. Four windows are symmetrically arranged on the south elevation; single windows are found on the 1822 north wing, and in the east and west gables. The windows have 10 panes of glass, and the roof is covered in composite tiles.
The interior has been cleared and is now used as a Clan Gunn museum. An octagonal, panelled pulpit stands centrally on the south wall, with flanking staircases. Some bench seating and mural memorials remain.
The surrounding burial ground is enclosed by a drystone wall, with three rubble gatepiers marking the pedestrian and carriage entrances. It is densely populated with tombstones dating from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. A small, gabled rubble watch house is also present.
Important to note: the ground beneath Latheron Old Parish Church is designated a Scheduled Monument, known as 'Latheron Old Church & The Aisle' (Monument No 3295), and is therefore excluded from this listing. Archaeological remains of significance may survive both above and below ground.
The statutory address for this listed building is Latheron Old Parish Church and Burial Ground, excluding Scheduled Monument No 3295 'Latheron Old Church and The Aisle,' Latheron.
