Description

Coulags Bridge is a single-span bridge built circa 1815 by Thomas Telford and subsequently rebuilt or extensively repaired to its original design in 1880. The bridge crosses the Fionn-Ahainn River and lies on the parliamentary road between Contin and Strome Ferry, built between 1813 and 1819. The bridge’s construction is of rubble, with a dressed rubble arch ring and parapet cope. It features spayed approaches and shallow end buttresses. Advertisements for tenders appeared in the Inverness Courier on February 12, 1880. A.R.B. Halkdane’s “New Ways Through the Glens” (1962) provides further detail on pages 98 and 137.
