Description

This is a large, U-shaped farm steading situated at Tullich. The steading dates primarily to the early 19th and mid-19th centuries. The western arm contains a substantial Kintail-type cruck-framed threshing barn, built in the early 1800s. A range dating from the mid-19th century fills the eastern arm, connected by a low, central byre range. The byre range includes a segmental-headed arch spanning a path leading to the farmhouse situated to the north. The steading is constructed of harled, pointed rubble, with later ranges having slate roofs.

The threshing barn has large boulder footings and features wide, louvred and wattled vents occupying a significant portion of its east and west walls. Two pairs of winnowing doorways are visible. An internal party wall divides the barn into two sections. Evidence of cruck stumps remains, along with wall vents indicating the positions of six further pairs. The barn was originally roofed with corrugated iron; remnants of a circular horse walk are visible on the east side. This is an unusually large barn, measuring approximately 20 feet by 120 feet. The crucks, or couples, would originally have supported a heavy heather-thatched roof. A small, freestanding shed with a corrugated roof, located within the courtyard, is not included as part of the listed building. The associated farmhouse is not listed. Highland Folk Ways by I.F. Grant (1961, p.113) provides further details.
