Description
The Lochcarron Hotel is an early 19th-century building, likely erected around 1804 and initially described as a newly built inn. It was extended and altered in 1847 by James Ross. The original core of the hotel is two storeys and an attic, with a wide three-bay front. A central bay is projected forward, has a gable, and contains the main entrance, attic window, and a chimney at the apex. Two later, canted dormers have been added to the roof. A two-storey, three-bay extension is continuous with the west gable. To the west is a further single-storey and attic wing, with three large, shaped gabled dormers that rise through the wallhead. The entire building is harled with contrasting painted margins. Most windows have 12 panes. There are corniced end and ridge stacks, and slate roofs. A modern, single-storey sun parlour now obscures much of the ground floor. A modern bar entrance is located at the west side. While the hotel possesses historical significance, it has been affected by unfortunate and more recent additions. Further information about the building is available from the Buildings of Scotland Research Unit and from an article in the Edinburgh Evening Courant of June 30, 1804.
