Description
This is a late 18th and early 19th century walled courtyard steading, approximately 100 feet by 100 feet in size, located at New Kelso Farm Square. The east and west sides of the courtyard are defined by two cruck-framed ranges, while the north side features a cart shed, stables, and byre, and the south side an implement shed. Sheep tanks are situated within the courtyard. The buildings are constructed of rubble, with some areas white-washed.
The original east range is long and low, originally comprising a louvred hay barn and byre. The byre retains the remains of four pairs of crucks. It has a corrugated iron roof. The west side of the courtyard is occupied by a larger barn of the Kintail type. This barn features a central winnowing door in each of its long walls, with the remainder of the walling consisting of four wide, louvred vents from which the cruck blades supporting the roof are now missing. A louvred vent is also located in the centre of the north gable. A later entrance has been inserted in the south gable; it also has a corrugated iron roof.
A later L-plan building accommodates a cart shed, stables, and byre; alongside a three-bay implement shed. Both of these later structures have slate roofs.
This is an unusual courtyard steading. Historically, the barns were likely heather thatched and would have had one or two pairs of crucks rising from the cill of each vent to support the heavy thatch.
