Description
This is a Free Church of Scotland church built in 1846 and altered in 1859 by Ross & Joass. It is a T-plan building with harled walls. The north elevation features a projecting gabled wing with a wide central doorway containing a double plank door and a round-headed fanlight with intersecting tracery, flanked by two taller, round-headed windows, and a smaller window above. Single round-headed windows are set into the north elevation, and four similar windows are symmetrically placed on the south elevation. All windows are tall and have a thick central wooden mullion terminating in simple Y-tracery, with multi-pane glazing. The roof is slate covered. Modern single-storey lean-to extensions have been added to the east and west gables. The interior is galleried, with a five-sided gallery supported by a cast-iron column with acanthus leaf decoration to the capitals. Original fittings, including the pulpit, remain. The building is still in ecclesiastical use and is mentioned in Ewing, Annals of the Free Church, ii (1906) p.228. Further information is available from the Buildings of Scotland Research Unit.
