Description
These late 18th century cottages form part of the planned fishing village of Loch Bay, which was begun in 1786 for the British Fisheries Society. The cottages are arranged in a long, two-storey row, set at a skewed angle to the plan. Most of the cottages have a continuous eaves line, but the “Captain’s House” on the west side is more substantial, taller, wider, and deeper, with a full attic storey and possibly dating to the mid-19th century. It is said that it originally had four bays and a shop and was rebuilt in 1955 after the left-hand gable collapsed. An adjoining narrow two-bay cottage has no first-floor windows but retains the main eaves level. A further house, with large windows and a box dormer, is included due to its group value. These three houses are harled and have undergone the most recent alterations. The remaining cottages have dormered first-floor windows breaking through the eaves, except for "Henderson House," which is listed separately. The cottage at the east end has a substantial gabled porch and a lean-to on its east side. All the cottages are rubble-built, whitewashed or painted, with sections rendered at the east end, and have slate roofs with skews and end stacks. The windows are mostly sashes, or of a traditional appearance. There are outshots at the rear, along with rubble-walled gardens. “The Store” is believed to be a comparatively modern infilling of a gap site.
