Gesto Cottage, Gesto Terrace, Stein Village, Skye

A pair of late 18th or early 19th century cottages, forming part of the planned fishing village of Lochbay, which construction began in 1796 for the British Fisheries Society. The cottages are single-storey, with three bays and a centre door, built of rubble. They face north and are set back-to-back with Macleod Terrace, indicating a potential street layout not realised in Telford's plans for Lochbay.

The cottage closest to the west side retains an essentially unaltered appearance, featuring whitewashed front elevations, although the windows are now fixed. It has a slate roof with skews over the east gable. Slappings in the south wall are of different dates. To the east of this cottage, a long, ruinous row stands; it may have been originally intended as cottages, though it lacks internal cross-walls. Only the south wall and east gable of this row survive to full height.

The cottage closest to the east was formerly used as a byre and was converted to domestic use around 1980. It has undergone more extensive alterations, including white rendering, a modern tile roof, an addition to the west gable, a plain timber porch, and a box dormer to the rear (south).
