Stein Parks Cottage, Gesto Terrace, Stein Village, Skye

These are a pair of late 18th or early 19th century cottages, part of the planned fishing village of Lochbay, which began construction from 1796 for the British Fisheries Society. The cottages are single-storey, three-bay buildings with a central door, built of rubble and face north. They are set back-to-back with MacLeod Terrace, intended to front a street that would have been built had Telford’s ambitious plans for Lochbay been fully realized.

The cottage closest to the west side is whitewashed and largely retains its original appearance, although the glazing is not original. It has a slate roof with skews over the east gable. Slappings (areas of infill) in the south wall are of different dates. Attached to the east gable of this cottage is a long, ruinous row which may have been intended from the beginning as cottages, although it lacks internal cross-walls. Only the south wall and the east gable survive to full height.

The cottage nearest the east side was formerly used as a byre and converted to domestic use around 1980, and has undergone more alterations. It is white-rendered, with a modern tile roof, a west-gable addition, a plain timber porch, and a box dormer to the rear (south).
