Description
This is a late 18th century row of houses, developed as part of the planned fishing village of Lochbay, which began construction in 1796 for the British Fisheries Society. The row is long and two storeys high, arranged at a skewed angle. The "Captains House" on the western side is larger and more substantial than the others, being taller, wider, and deeper, with a full attic storey, placing its construction likely in the mid-19th century. It is said to have originally had four bays and a shop, and was rebuilt in 1955 following the collapse of the left-hand gable. A narrower two-bay house adjoining the Captains House has no first-floor windows, but it maintains the same eaves level as the rest of the row. A third house, distinguished by its large windows and box dormer, is included in the listing primarily for its group value. These three houses are harled and have undergone the most recent alterations. The remaining houses have dormered first-floor windows breaking through the eaves, with "Henderson House" being listed separately. The house at the eastern end features a substantial gabled porch and a lean-to addition on the east side. All the houses are rubble-built, whitewashed or painted, with the eastern end being rendered. They have slate roofs with skews and end stacks. The windows are mostly sashes or of a traditional appearance. Outshots are present at the rear, along with rubble-walled gardens. A house known as 'The Store' is considered a more recent addition, built to fill a gap in the row.
