Description

This is a late 18th century house, with subsequent development, forming part of the planned fishing village of Lochbay, begun in 1786 for the British Fisheries Society. It is a long, two-storey row of houses, set at a skewed angle to the plan, with a consistent eaves line across most of the buildings. The "Captain's House" on the western end is significantly more substantial, being taller, wider, and deeper than the others and incorporating a full attic storey, suggesting a mid-19th century date. It is said that this house originally had four bays and a shop, and was rebuilt in 1955 after a gable collapse. An adjacent, narrow, two-bay house has no first-floor windows but maintains the principal eaves level. A further house with large windows and a box dormer is included due to its group value. The first three houses are harled and have undergone the most recent alterations. The other houses have dormered first-floor windows breaking through the eaves, with the exception of "Henderson House," which is listed separately. The house at the eastern end features a substantial gabled porch and a lean-to on its eastern side. All the buildings are rubble-built, whitewashed or painted – with the eastern end rendered – and have slate roofs with skews and end stacks. The windows are predominantly sash windows or of a traditional appearance. Outshots are present at the rear, along with rubble-walled gardens. 'The Store' is considered a comparatively modern infilling, built to fill a gap within the terrace.
