Description

The Roman Catholic Church of St Mary’s, Beauly, was constructed in 1864, and is likely the work of Joseph Hansom. It is a tall, early pointed Gothic church, oriented east to west, comprising a nave, chancel, and a north aisle. The exterior is built of coursed red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The west gable features a centrally placed, pointed-headed entrance, with paired narrow windows above, linked by a continuous hoodmould. A wheel window with plate tracery sits at the apex of the gable, and angle buttresses are also visible. The north and south flanks both have five bays, with buttressing and a further off-centre entrance in the south elevation. These flanks are punctuated by windows with Y-tracery. A gabled chancel is located at the east end, with transepts, and is linked to the presbytery to the south. The windows are largely filled with leaded-pane glazing, and a bellcote is situated on the east gable of the nave. Slate roofs cover the building.

Inside, the north side features an arcade and a small Lady Chapel to the east. A tall, Gothic arch frames the chancel, incorporating nailhead detailing. A marble altar is present, alongside panelled pine dado panelling, pine pews, and a gallery at the west end. A timber ceiling completes the interior.

The burial ground and presbytery are enclosed by a harled rubble wall with a roughly crenellated coping.

The presbytery is a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical dwelling constructed of red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The right-hand bay is gabled, featuring a gabled porch in a re-entrant angle. The ground and first floor windows are tripartite in design. A canted bay window is found on the south garden front, with two-pane glazing. Coped end stacks, decorative bargeboards, and a slate roof complete the appearance.

The church remains in ecclesiastical use.
