Description

St Mary's Roman Catholic Church was built in 1864, and is likely the work of Joseph Hansom. It is a tall, east-west oriented church of pointed Gothic design, comprising a nave, chancel, and a north aisle. The exterior is constructed of coursed red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The west gable features a centrally placed, pointed-headed entrance, with paired narrow windows above, linked by a continuous hoodmould. A wheel window with plate tracery sits at the gable apex, with angle buttresses present. The north and south flanks have five buttressed bays, with further off-centre entrances on the south elevation, and windows featuring Y-tracery. A gabled chancel is located at the east end, featuring transepts, and is linked to the presbytery to the south. The windows have mainly leaded-pane glazing, and a bellcote is situated at the east gable of the nave. The church has slate roofs.

Inside, an arcade runs along the north side, with a small Lady Chapel located to the east. A tall Gothic arch frames the chancel, incorporating nailhead detailing. Other interior features include a marble altar, panelled pine dado, pine pews, and a gallery at the west end. A timber ceiling completes the interior.

The burial ground and presbytery are enclosed by a harled rubble wall with a roughly crenellated coping.

The presbytery is a two-storey, three-bay asymmetrical dwelling constructed of red rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. The right bay is gabled, with a gabled porch in the re-entrant angle. Tripartite windows are present on both the ground and first floors. A canted bay window is visible on the south garden front. Other features include two-pane glazing, coped end stacks, decorative bargeboards, and a slate roof. The church remains in ecclesiastical use.
