Description
The building comprises a house and associated gighouse and stables, dating from around 1800 to 1810. The two-storey house, built over a raised basement, has five bays and is constructed of coursed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings and margins. A corniced door sits at the centre, approached by a shallow flight of steps over the raised basement, which features a cast-iron handrail. The door surround has moulded jambs and a decorative fanlight. A bandcourse runs between the raised basement and the ground floor. The first floor windows are smaller, with bays two and four having blind openings. The windows have 9-pane and 12-pane glazing. A moulded eaves band, corniced end stacks, and a slate roof complete the exterior. The rear elevation is symmetrical, with a tall stair window centrally placed.
Inside, the house has simple corniced ceilings, including a frieze embossed with Mackenzie stags’ heads in the entrance hall. It also features a semi-circular stairwell and original panelled doors and doorcases. The house is said to have been built by Simon Mackenzie.
The gighouse and stables are a simple, low whitewashed rubble building. A swept dormer is visible above the current garage door, with pigeon flightholes incorporated, and a piended loft dormer is located in the west gable of the building, which has a piended slate roof.
