Description
This is a gate lodge, built around 1869 in the style of Alexander Ross. It is a single-story building with three bays, featuring a gabled projecting central open porch. The lodge is constructed of coursed rubble masonry with tooled dressings. A canted bay window is present, topped with a crenellated parapet on the south gable; the north gable features a bipartite window. Other decorative features include gabletted crowsteps, ball finials, a corniced ridge stack, and a slate roof. A rear extension is also present.
The entrance is marked by two pairs of square, tooled ashlar gate piers, which have wide, stopped chamfers and quatrefoil decoration. The central pair of piers are topped with eagle owl terminals. Low, coped quadrants of stugged coursed rubble extend from the piers, with their end piers echoing the detailing of the gate piers themselves. Elaborate cast-iron railings, along with separate pedestrian and carriage gates, complete the arrangement.
