Description

Scotta’s House is a two-storey and attic house dating from 1773, situated in Inverie, Knoydart, and facing south. The house is constructed of whitewashed rubble with polished ashlar dressings and margins. It has a symmetrical design and five bays. The front elevation features rusticated ashlar quoins and a central door with a moulded architrave; all front windows have ashlar margins. A band runs along the eaves and lintel line, connecting the first-floor windows. The original windows have 12 panes of glass, though some alterations have occurred to the rear. Dormer windows, which are modern and considered unfortunate, have been added to the front and rear of the building and contain 9-pane windows. A stair window is positioned centrally at the rear. Scroll skewputts are present, dated "17" on the left and "73" on the right. The end stacks have been renewed and the roof is covered in slate.

A single-storey barn and byre, situated to the west and at a right angle to the main house, has been converted into additional accommodation and linked to the house at the west gable by a modern glazed porch. The interior contains no original internal features.

Formerly belonging to the Macdonells of Glengarry, the house was previously known as “Scothouse.” Unfortunate box dormers were added prior to 1975. The Statistical Account of 1798, page 265, provides further details.
