Description
This is a two-storey and attic house, dated 1773, situated in Knoydart. Originally a five-bay, symmetrical, south-facing structure, it is constructed of whitewashed rubble with polished ashlar dressings and margins. The front elevation features rusticated ashlar quoins and a central doorway with a moulded architrave, along with ashlar margins to all front windows. A band runs along the eaves and lintel line, connecting the first-floor windows. The building originally had 12-pane glazing to most windows, although some alterations have occurred to the rear fenestration. Dormer windows, which are modern and described as unfortunate, have been added at both the front and rear, with 9-pane glazing. A central stair window is located at the rear. Decorative scroll skewputts are present, displaying the dates "17" and "73." The roof is slate-covered, and the end stacks have been renewed.
Attached to the west of the main house, at a right angle, is a single-storey barn/byre, now converted into additional accommodation. A modern glazed porch links the byre to the house at the west gable. The interior contains no original internal fittings.
The house was formerly the property of the Macdonells of Glengarry and was known as "Scothouse." Unfortunate box dormers were inserted prior to 1975. The Statistical Account of 1798 (page 265) provides further details.
