Description
The Roman Catholic Church of St Cumin and Presbytery date from 1888. The church is a plain, rectangular building with a bowed east gable. The presbytery is a single-and-a-half storey structure projecting at right angles to the southeast, forming an L-shaped arrangement. Both buildings are constructed of tooled, sneck-coursed rubble with tooled granite dressings.
The church’s south elevation features four bays with three pointed arched windows, low alternating buttresses, and a projecting lean-to porch incorporated into the base of a battered round tower at the southwest angle. The tower rises two stages above the wallhead, with four square-headed, louvred vents in the upper stage, bracketed, a bellcast conical roof, and a decorative cast-iron finial. A trefoil window is set in the apex of the west gable, with a shouldered niche below containing a statuette. Some modern stained glass is present. A cross stands at the west gable apex, and the building has a slate roof.
The church interior is simple, featuring a short gallery at the west end. The presbytery has an off-centre door in its west elevation, with three windows breaking the wallhead as gabled dormers. The windows contain two-pane glazing. The presbytery has end and ridge stacks and a slate roof.
The building remains in continuous ecclesiastical use. References to the building appear in Frederick Odo Blundell’s The Catholic Highlands of Scotland, volume ii, pages 114-16.
