Description
The Church of Scotland in Inverie, Knoydart, dates from 1859. It is a simple, rectangular church with three bays, alongside a single-bay chancel which is slightly lower and situated at the east gable. The church is built of harl-pointed rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. A porch projects from the centre of the west gable, which is also harled, and another porch extends from the re-entrant angle on the north side, adjacent to the east gable of the chancel. The west gable features paired, small, pointed-headed windows with a shaped oculus above. Similar windows illuminate the north and south long elevations. A tall, pointed-headed window with Y-tracery is set into the east gable, all with lattice pane glazing. A simple bellcote sits atop the west gable apex, with triangular skewputts, and the building is capped with steeply pitched slate roofs. The church remains in ecclesiastical use. Knoydart, like Moidart, possesses a traditional Roman Catholic heritage, once supported by three Roman Catholic churches or chapels, one of which survives in use at Inverie.
