Description
Latheronwheel House is a rambling two-storey house with elements dating back to the late 18th century and early 19th century, significantly altered in 1853. The original portion is of harled rubble construction, while the remainder is of rubble with tooled ashlar dressings. In 1853, David Bryce added substantial Scottish Baronial style extensions to the south, effectively recasting the house.
The south-facing frontage is dominated by a drum tower within a re-entrant angle, featuring a doorway and a dated plaque above. The tower rises three storeys, topped with a conical bellcast slated roof, diminutive gabletted dormers, and a decorative wrought- and cast-iron weathervane. Flanking the tower are polygonal bay windows, each rising the full height of the building and sporting facetted slate roofs and cast-iron finials. A corbelled angle bartizan is located at the southeast angle. The wallhead is punctuated by finialled gabletted dormers. The windows contain multiple panes of glazing, and the roof is finished with corniced end and ridge stacks. Slate roofs cover the entire structure.
Two large lean-to conservatories adjoin the west gable. Various rear service wings have been added. The 1853 alterations and additions were commissioned for Captain Hon. R Dunbar. A plaque above the main entrance reads “J & R 1853 D”.
