Description
This is an 1808 pier, built by David Wilson, substantially rebuilt in 1850 by W. Leslie, and subsequently altered. The pier is constructed of short-coursed, dressed rubble with a protective parapet at its west end. A substantial half-round string course and steps lead down to the shore on the west side. A later 19th-century two-storey timber boathouse and waiting room is attached. This structure features a single bay with a wide boat entrance in the south elevation, opening directly onto the beach. A single doorway on the east elevation of the first floor gives access to the pier. The roof is piended and covered in slate, with projecting eaves. References relating to the pier and boathouse can be found in John Hume's The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland, Scottish Record Office RHP 11 6 55, and the National Library of Scotland, Dept. 313/3618.
