Description
This is an 1808 pier, constructed with short-coursed, dressed rubble, featuring a protective parapet to the west. A substantial, half-round string course and steps lead to the shore on the west side. The pier was rebuilt in 1850 by W. Leslie, with later alterations. A two-storey timber boathouse and waiting room, dating to the later 19th century, is situated on the pier. It comprises a single bay with a wide boat entrance on the south elevation, opening onto the beach, and a doorway on the first floor of the east elevation, giving access to the pier. The roof is piended and covered with slate, featuring projecting eaves. John Hume’s The Industrial Archaeology of Scotland (volume 2, page 317) provides further detail. Records relating to the building can be found at the Scottish Record Office (RHP 11 6 55) and the National Library of Scotland (Department 313/3618).
