Description
This is a probably early to mid-19th century, rectangular, south-facing cruck-framed steading, originally comprising a stable and byre. A later, smaller range stands to the rear at right angles. The buildings are constructed of rubble with mortar and renewed pointing.
The byre and steading have rounded corners, heightened at the wallhead by a concrete eaves course. Pronounced triangular corbels are positioned at the corners to accommodate the current corrugated iron roof, which replaced a former thatched roof. The roof is piended at the west end and gabled at the east. A small wallhead stable window is located at the rear, and small triangular vents are present in both the north and south elevations of the byre.
A simple, lower, single-storey gabled range is attached to the rear. A small gabled extension sits at the north gable end; the south gable of this section is weatherboarded, possibly replacing a former turf gable. There are three entrances and corrugated iron roofs on this rear range.
Snowburn House is not included in the listing. It is difficult to precisely date traditional vernacular buildings of this type. The steading represents an unusually complete survival of a simple range once common along the shore of Loch Eil.
