Description

Fassfern Bridge is a single-span rubble bridge likely designed by Thomas Telford and built between 1803 and 1804. It crosses the An T-Suileag Burn. The bridge is slightly humped, constructed of rough rubble with a dressed rubble arch ring and a low parapet. The western approach is widely splayed. The road connecting Locheil and Loch na Gaul (often referred to as Arisaig) was begun by local landowners in 1803 and finished by the Commissioners for Highland Roads and Bridges between 1804 and 1805. Although the main road has been realigned, the bridge and the original road remain in use. Further details are provided in A.R.B. Haldane’s New Ways Through the Glens (1962).
