Description

The complex comprises a shooting lodge, stables, and game larders, all dating from 1886. The lodge is an asymmetrical, medium-sized, gabled building. It is constructed of stylised random grey rubble with ribbon pointing at ground floor level, with a rendered first floor featuring mock timber framing and stippled infill, and finely tooled contrasting sandstone dressings. A wide verandah, supported by timber columns, encloses the ground floor on its east and south sides; the entrance is located within a projecting porch on the east elevation. The lodge has mullioned and transomed windows, shaped and corniced end and ridge stacks, and a Welsh slate roof. The interior retains original panelling throughout the ground and first floors, along with original chimney pieces on both floors. A balustraded staircase rises from a panelled hall to the first-floor landing. Chimney pieces are recessed into alcoves in the ground-floor drawing and dining rooms, and in the master bedroom on the first floor; the drawing room's chimney piece has an ochre marble surround initialled 'WS'. A projecting 'Tudor' chimney piece is located in the hall. Some first-floor panelling has been painted white, while some window reveals have mirrored panels; sections of ground floor panelling in the rear passage and gun room incorporate inlaid deerhide. Ribbed plaster ceilings are present in the drawing room, dining room, and master bedroom.

The single-storey and attic stables are of similar materials to the lodge. They provide stabling for four horses, with stalls and a feed shoot from the loft above, alongside a saddle room, gighouse (now a garage), and an attic room and loft. Many original fittings remain.

Two rectangular game larders are situated close to the shore; the larger is intended for deer, while the smaller is for birds. They are built of stylised random grey rubble with piended slated roofs. Internally, the walls are tiled, and all original fittings are present.

The site is on a commanding position on the western end of Loch Glass. The complex was built by and for Walter Shoolbred of the firm of Shoolbred, cabinet makers, with all internal panelling crafted by the family firm. Some Shoolbred furniture is present in the lodge, and all materials were transported by steamer from the eastern end of Loch Glass.
