Description

Byre Cottage, part of Beechwood Steading, was built as a house in 1794. Additions were made in 1835, and the property was described in 1861. The house is two storeys with an attic, and originally had three bays. The exterior is harled with ashlar detailing. The central bay has a gable and a chimney at the apex, with a central doorway that is now masked by a later projecting gabled porch. The ground floor windows on either side of the porch have been enlarged into two-part designs. There are two piended dormers. A two-storey, three-bay wing extends from the rear, to the northwest, and a single-storey, three-bay cottage forms the northeast corner, creating a rear U-shaped courtyard. Windows have 12, 9, and 4 panes of glass. Corniced stacks are located on the ridge and at the ends of the building, and the roof is slate.

Inside, the stairwell features turned balusters, and there is a wide entrance hall.

The steading includes a long stable block, a byre, and a gighouse, all single-storey with a dormered hayloft. These buildings are constructed of whitewashed rubble with slate roofs.

The property was formerly part of the Fodderty Church of Scotland Parish Manse, replacing an earlier manse that is now Foderty Lodge. Nearby stands a former Church of Scotland church dating from 1803-1807, which was converted into a dwelling between 1905 and 1910 and has been renamed Kilvannie.

Historical records mention the property in the New Statistical Account (1845), the Inverness Courier (April 22, 1835), and the Inverness Advertiser (March 30, 1861), including advertisements for tenders.
