Description

Stable Cottage, part of Beechwood Steading at Fodderty, was built in 1794, with additions made in 1835 and noted in 1861. The building is a two-storey and attic house of three bays, with harled walls and ashlar margins. The central bay has a gable and an apex chimney, and originally had a central door which is now masked by a later projecting gabled porch. The ground floor windows on either side of the centre bay have been enlarged into bipartites. Two piended dormers light the attic space. A two-storey, three-bay wing extends to the rear at the northwest, and a single-storey, three-bay cottage at the northeast forms a rear U-plan court. The windows have 12, 9, and 4-pane glazing. Corniced stacks rise from the ridge and ends of the roof, which is slate.

Inside, the stairwell has turned balusters and there is a wide entrance hall.

The steading includes a long stable, a byre, and a gighouse block, all single-storey with a dormer hay loft. These buildings are constructed of whitewashed rubble with a slate roof.

Stable Cottage was part of the former Foderty Church of Scotland Parish Manse, replacing a previous manse that is now Foderty Lodge. Nearby stands a former Church of Scotland church built in 1803-1807, which was converted into a dwelling between 1905 and 1910 and is now named Kilvannie.

Historical records, including the New Statistical Account (1845), and advertisements in the Inverness Courier (1835) and Inverness Advertiser (1861), provide additional information.
