Description
The Gate Lodge, built around 1840, is a single-story T-plan lodge situated near Castle Leod. The symmetrical east facade, featuring three bays, faces the entrance to the castle. The lodge is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings. The east front has a projecting gabled porch in the centre, featuring a hoodmoulded doorway displaying the Cromartie arms above, as well as finialled skewputts and a similar finial on the apex. Flanking the porch are tripartite windows. A rectangular hoodmoulded bay window is located in the south gable, again displaying the Cromartie arms above. All gable ends are distinguished by exaggerated finialled skewputts and apex finials. The window glazing is unusual, consisting of small hexagonal panes, most of which remain intact. A rear wing has an end stack, and the roof is covered with shallow pitched slate.
A pair of plain, square, rusticated gate piers with shallow ashlar pyramidal caps support a pair of cast-iron carriage gates featuring spearhead detailing.
